While people are very familiar with the executive and legislative branches of government, few know about our judicial branch and the important role it plays in the laws that affect us every day. Our courts hold wrongdoers accountable, protect our rights and keep us safe. Additionally, while there is a lot of focus on our 1st Amendment , 2nd Amendment and 4th Amendment rights, most people don’t know about their Sixth and Seventh Amendment rights to trial by jury in both criminal and civil cases. This is particularly important since it is our 7th Amendment rights that allow us to challenge our government when our other rights are threatened.

An Introduction to West Virginia Courts
Of our three branches of government, our court system is the least well known. Learn about the different levels of courts, types of laws, jury service and our state’s criminal and civil courts. Different versions of this program are available, including programs for elementary, middle and high schools as well as adult audiences.

All Americans are familiar with the Bill of Rights, but some of those amendments are better known and better appreciated than others. The First Amendment, Second Amendment and, with the current debate on government surveillance, the Fourth Amendment are in the news every day.
