Zoom Your Way to Success: Get the Virtual Practice Strategies You Need
"Lawyers need to accept practicing virtually or get left behind. They need to learn how to be the best lawyers they can be in a virtual practice as well as in the courtroom."
COVID-19 has changed a lot about how attorneys are practicing law right now. While some of these changes will go away when the pandemic ends, others are probably here to stay. At the top of that list are depositions and hearings via Zoom and other online platforms.
"Virtual legal practice isn't going away. Eventually we will go back to the courthouses, but every single lawyer is going to continue to see a lot more work being done remotely," said Zoe Littlepage, one of America's leading trial lawyers and a partner with the Houston firm of Littlepage, Booth, and Leckman.
"Virtual practice is not a bad thing. It's efficient and less expensive. Lawyers need to accept practicing virtually or get left behind. They need to learn how to be the best lawyers they can be in a virtual practice as well as in the courtroom."
Zoe will present "Practicing Law in a Virtual World: Tips and Tricks on Zoom Depositions, Remote Hearings and More" for the West Virginia Association for Justice 2021 Mid-Winter Seminar Online. The seminar is February 18 - 19, 2021.
Already a national leader in how to use demonstrative aids at trial, including using visual aids as part of a "Rules of the Road" strategy, Zoe is now a leader in storytelling and visuals when practicing virtually. She is a featured speaker in Trial Guide's "Practicing Law in a Post-COVID World."
"Many attorneys have been overwhelmed by shifting to a virtual practice. They're spending a lot of time watching You Tube videos just to get the basics," said Zoe.
True success, however, comes when attorneys utilize their existing courtroom skills and take that technology from just the basics to the next level.
"Great trial lawyers are great storytellers. You don't have bedtime facts, you have bedtime stories. You help the jury better understand the case by creating better stories," said Zoe.
"That's even more important when practicing virtually. You have to present a better story as both a persuasive orator and through the quality of your visual presentation. You have to be better than the other side and give the judge and jury the more interesting show."
That better show will come down to the 3 Es of Zoe's session--equipment, examples and end results.
"Attorneys need to be comfortable with Zoom and learn more about what Zoom can do. At the same time, you can spend a small amount of money and get the equipment you need to improve the quality of your Zoom presentation. We'll cover these areas because this initial set-up is critical."
Zoe's examples will show you how you can conduct your Zoom depositions more effectively so that you have what you need for trial. For end results, she will show you how the first two elements come together to help improve your chance of success at trial.
