WVAJ Students Association

The WVAJ Student Association prepares law students for a career in trial advocacy, with particular emphasis on civil plaintiffs’ practice.  As a member you will participate in educational and networking opportunities and help preserve our 7th Amendment right to trial by jury.  In addition, the association promotes the importance of protecting equal access to justice and improving our civil justice system in order to ensure that any person who is injured by the misconduct and negligence of others can obtain justice in our state and federal courtrooms.

The West Virginia Association for Justice Student Association helps you develop the contacts, skills and knowledge you need to be a successful law student and practicing attorney.  There is no greater investment you can make in your future legal career—and it’s just $20.

Student Member Benefits
Meetings
WVAJ Student Association meetings feature our state’s leading trial attorneys, judges and others!  Learn about the practice of law, legal research, trial advocacy skills and more.  Meetings are free for student members and provide you with the information and resources you need as both a law student and future attorney.

Networking
As a member of the WVAJ Student Association, you will be able to network with our state’s premier civil plaintiffs’ attorneys and can connect with more than 500 lawyers practicing throughout West Virginia and in surrounding states.  Interested in a particular practice area?  Meet with attorneys who specialize in those fields.  Connect with WVAJ’s New Lawyers Division, Women’s Caucus or WVAJ members practicing in your local community.

Student Listserv
The WVAJ Student Association listserv provides you with immediate access to other student members.  Get information, share ideas, post course outlines and ask questions.   Have a legal research question or need help while clerking over the summer?  Ask other members for their assistance or advice.  Our listserv also gives every student association member access to practicing West Virginia attorneys when you need guidance.  The listserv will also offer special forums and “ask the expert” events.

Mentoring Program
Interested in pursuing a career in civil plaintiffs’ law after law school?  As a member of the WVAJ Student Association, you can participate in our mentoring program and be paired with one of West Virginia’s leading trial lawyers.  Learn about the day-to-day practice of law, your ethical and legal obligations, how to advocate effectively for your clients and other information you need to know to be successful in your legal career.

Career Resources
The West Virginia Association for Justice can help connect you with its member law firms who are hiring new associates and summer clerks.  Post your resume to the WVAJ Job Bank.

Cutting-Edge Education
West Virginia Association for Justice conventions provide you with information and trial skills you won’t learn in the classroom.  Whether you’re interested in learning about trial advocacy, trends in civil litigation and emerging areas of the law or you simply want to hear from the foremost trial lawyers practicing in America today, WVAJ conventions provide that for you at a special member law student rate of just $40.

Advocating for Justice
The West Virginia Association for Justice is the state’s leading advocate for a fair and effective civil justice system.  With an unprecedented attack on the 7th Amendment and our civil courts, legal advocacy is no longer limited to the courtroom.  Stay informed about state and federal legislation that affects your future practice.  More importantly, learn what you can do to help—and be part of the effort to protect access to our courts for all West Virginians.
